We are updating the product warranty criterion in TCO Certified, generation 10. The change applies to products classified as peripherals. For these products, the required warranty period is shortened.

When TCO Certified, generation 10 was originally developed, the warranty requirement was set to a minimum of five years for all product categories. Since the launch, the interest for peripherals has increased rapidly and we have gathered additional insights that were not available during the consultation phases. These insights show that peripherals differ significantly from other IT products in terms of cost, technical complexity, usage patterns, and market conditions.

To ensure that TCO Certified remains both relevant and feasible, criterion 6.1 (Product warranty) is now being updated.

Updated warranty criterion

In all markets where the product is sold, the brand owner must:

  • Offer a 5-year minimum available warranty, where at least 1 year must be included free of charge.
  • For peripherals (defined here), the requirement is instead a 2-year available warranty, where at least 1 year must be included free of charge.
  • Each year of warranty not included free of charge must be offered at a maximum of 15% of the product’s MSRP and must be available for purchase together with the product.

Effective immediately

These changes take effect immediately and will be included in the next published edition of the TCO Certified, generation 10 criteria documents.
